My current figurative series “Bound By Beliefs” looks at how cultures throughout the world are bound and limited by beliefs passed down through tradition. I have examined the injustices imposed on child brides in the world, and how little say or control they have in their lives. Other pieces in this series reflect on what we personally believe to be true and how a belief can either empower or limit us.
Using clay and wood as my primary sculptural materials, I add binding metals and burnt word to express this concept. Hundreds of copper nails pounded into the wood express hundreds of beliefs or as one piece is titled, "A Thousand Reasons."
Growing up in California, I know that my love of the outdoors, the ocean, the mountains and deserts have inspired and permeated my work. I enjoy spending hours on a beach looking at rocks, as well as taking Los Angeles alley walks collecting industrial castaways. I am inspired by hiking, cycling and yoga, African Tribal Art, simplified figures of early Mediterranean culture and the poets Rumi and Mary Oliver. I live in Southern California with my husband, 2 kids, a wolfhound and hedgehog.
