GERARD TSUTAKAWA

GERARD TSUTAKAWA

GERARD TSUTAKAWA Biography

Gerard Tsutakawa apprenticed with his father, late George Tsutakawa, for ten years. He then oversaw all of his father’s fountain and sculpture fabrication and installation, including many major public works. Since this early apprenticeship, he has established himself as an accomplished sculptor in his own right and has been featured in solo and group shows throughout the Northwest. He has been recognized for his sensually abstract bronze sculpture and his elegant bronze fountains of flawless design and beauty.

Gerard Tsutakawa has completed numerous monumental corporate, institutional, and state commissions throughout the Northwest and Japan. Recurrent forms in Tsutakawa’s work include series of steps and repetitions of curves, which often combine to create a dynamic tension before allowing the essential balance to come through and transform the experience into one of deep serenity.

GERARD TSUTAKAWA Description

Gerard Tsutakawa’s designs are a confluence of the cultures and traditions of the Pacific Rim. Tsutakawa grew up with a rich heritage of Japanese design creativity and sensibility combined with a lifetime spent in the Pacific Northwest’s beautiful natural environment. In addition, exposure to the esthetics of cultures around the Pacific Rim instilled a humanistic approach to his creative process. He gathers images as bold as a Tongan war club, or as sensitive as folded origami paper, and creates a subliminal integration as a new art form.
