Raynie, 2001

PEDESTAL SCULPTURE bronze
21.5 x 8.5 x 9 in
56 x 23 x 23 cm

Edition 1 of 12

"Raynie" stands on an attached wood base as shown. The artist added small strokes of red and green to highlight selected areas of the dark patina and create a unique, painterly finish on the bronze. The wood base has a natural, unfinished edge on one side, and the character of the natural wood beautifully complements the sculpture's relaxed pose and gestural qualities.

Brill begins each piece by making a quick drawing as his model sits, stands, or lies down in a relaxed, natural pose. He aims to retain the immediacy of these sketches as he renders them in three dimensions in clay, leaving impressions from his fingers and tools as he sculpts the forms. The clay figures are then cast in bronze using the lost-wax process, but the impressions from the original clay are still evident in the finished bronze.
