Two Ladder Refuge, 2020

FREE STANDING SCULPTURE stone
58 x 30 x 18 in
147 x 76 x 46 cm

Rebecca Johnson's "Two Ladder Refuge" sculpture is carved from a hexagonal column of solid basalt. The roof of the slender structure showcases the natural outer skin of the stone, a result of eons of weather effect on the stone. On the cut and polished sides, Johnson carved an entry door and ten windows to entice the viewer into the stone's interior. The basalt barn is placed on a basalt column, on which Johnson has carved two tall ladders. A roughly cut basalt base stone balances the sculpture, both physically and visually. The sculpture parts are pinned throughout so the work can be placed on a level patio or deck or directly on the ground in your garden.
