Key Lime is part of the series Fossils of the Future. This totem is built with repurposed plastic, concrete and mixed media. "I am an environmentalist at heart and passionate about the ocean, beachcombing, scuba diving, camping and hiking", says Burton. "Seeing plastic everywhere I went led me to create a series called Fossils of the Future. I have explored plastic debris as a viable art material in itself by incorporating the actual plastic into my art. Imagine a core sample of the earth in 500 years. What do you think that might look like? ...Plastics that we use every day, and see as disposable are not disposable at all.
By creating these monoliths and mini-liths my intent is to ask the questions, to raise awareness, as well as to transform problematic landfill into a thing of beauty."
