French artist Claude Roux opened her studio in Peyriac de Mer (Southwest France) to us recently, and we produced a fascinating short film in our video series spotlighting Sculpturesite Gallery artists: Inside the Sculptor's Studio. Her accompanying solo exhibition, "La Vie," now on display at Sculpturesite, is Roux’s first exhibition in the US.
Claude Roux's depiction of men, women, and children, nude or clothed, is profoundly humanist. There is no judgement, no admonition. Her “people” are of the earth, undeniably alive, and formed by tangible life experiences that we can each personally recognize or project as we please.
"What is important to me is honesty. To be honest, thoroughly dedicated, and always searching. We always have things to learn, this is what I love about life!”
View 11 works in ceramic, exclusive to Sculpturesite Gallery, 3 bronzes from clay originals, and 3 drawings: Expressive couples, figures astride a giraffe, donkey or horse, children, and older people with extraordinary expressions. The rich textural qualities of the stoneware Roux favors add depth, both visually and conceptually, and lead the viewer to experience a primal familiarity with her works -- a recognition. Roux’s works ultimately give us permission to be ourselves.
The video was produced by Sculpturesite Gallery and edited by Scott Saraceno.
Please scroll through to view the online catalogue for "La Vie" after you watch the video, and call or email the Gallery for more information about any of the work shown.
