Artists best known for their sculpture also share their works on paper and canvas. Sometimes ideas or sketches for a future sculpture project, a portrait of a realized sculpture or photos of large installations, these are often considered secondary by-products of a sculptor's main artistic direction. But just as often, artists resist the small boxes where critics, curators and gallerists want to place them (or lock them in!) Some ideas demand to be executed in 3D, to occupy floor space and breathe along with us in a room, in a city or in a garden, while others necessitate a flat background; they want to be stuck on a wall and become a window to the artist's dreamworld.
When studios and foundries closed this spring and sculptors found themselves in various conditions of lockdown, depending on their country or state, many turned to painting or drawing. Undoutedly, the recent events we have all experienced will result in some strong sculptural works. But in speaking with several of our sculpture artists recently, we have discoved some exciting 2D works that we would like to share with our friends and collectors.
We are delighted to present these 44 works by 8 artists mostly known as sculptors in an exclusive online exhibition. A wonderful range is available from the small collages by French ceramic artist Claude Roux to the massive works in carbon on canvas by metal sculptor JP Long; from the colorful paintings by bronze and marble sculptor Bill Barrett to the quiet mixed media works by ceramic sculptor Nina Lyons; from the metal, glass, paper and pastel wall sculptures by celebrated metal sculptor Bella Feldman to the delicate watercolors on paper Underwater series by bronze figurative sculptor John Denning and from the fully abstract Jane Burton paintings (her ceramic work is definitely figurative) to ceramic sculptor Mark Chatterley's dreamy and intricate paintings of multiple figures.
