We are delighted to introduce Steve Tobin's latest series of sculptures: NESTS, which explores his interpretation of bird nests in many shapes and dimensions, from miniature to garden size.
"The bronze NESTS are another phase in my existential transformation series", says Tobin. "Seeing yourself reflecting in the mirror-polished steel egg puts the viewer in the egg in the nest. This implies the question of our own transformations. What is next for us?"
Some NESTS are composed of cast bronze twigs, looking as though designed by a very meticulous bird and splashed with Tobin's ever creative patinas. Tobin clarifies: "The richly colored patinas are not meant to mimic nests in nature but are asking the question: what kind of creature made this? what will emerge...?"
Others are black painted welded steel, going up into a swirl reminiscent of an art nouveau flourish that evokes a stylized tornado. All hold one or several precious eggs in stainless steel or bronze. The eggs either exhibit a highly reflective mirror finish, or are in brushed stainless to appear bluish, and in all cases they offer a focus, a contrast to the nest structure and a reference to the beginning of life.
Steve Tobin is an American sculptor best known for his beyond monumental sculptures of Roots in steel or cast bronze. From his earlier 40’ tall glass waterfalls, the giant termite hills in Ghana that he cast into bronze sculptures as high as 20’, or his Earth Bronzes cast to mimic the forest floors, Tobin keeps going back to nature for inspiration. More recently, Tobin has created a series of highly reflective stainless steel clouds, bringing the sky down to earth, or hanging on the ceiling!
