We are delighted to present Variations on a Curve, an exclusive online exhibition of abstract sculptures in bronze, marble and painted steel by four established sculptors in various sizes for indoor and outdoor placement.
Watching a sculptor develop a new abstract work is truly fascinating! There is a grainy black and white video showing Clement Meadmore composing one of his tiny maquettes by arranging pre-cut curved and straight segments, each with a one-inch square cross section. The artist is clearly entranced with the process; he compares it to jazz improvisation (which he also practiced). He assembles, then modifies, apparently endlessly, because there can only be one perfect form of this particular work. Later, we get to admire the superbly balanced bronzes and the awesome monumental iterations of these tiny masterpieces. With the exception of some of his very early works, all of Meadmore sculptures exist for the curve: the straight lines there to highlight the curves, and the curves to give sense to the linear.
For Richard Erdman, the curve is everything. It directs the entire form of the sculpture, swoops in and out, inward and outward. The former ski champion takes ultimate risks when carving the thinnest shapes in marble, and then widens them to a generous sensuality. It all starts in his studio with the additive process of plastering over metal mesh on his models. This is where he creates, and what he describes as his most pleasurable moments as an artist. The forms become alive in his hands and once the rhythms are created, with the positive and negative spaces in place, he sands the plaster to a smooth finish, revealing what the stone or the bronze sculpture will become. And now of course begins the long and arduous process of realizing the finished works... to read more, click on this link to view the press release.
