JOHN TOKI - Recent Works in Ceramic
KRISTIN GUDJONSDOTTIR – From the So Many Series

January 14 - April 8, 2006

Sculpturesite Gallery is pleased to present 10 free-standing and wall hung works from the “So Many” series in glass, ceramic and steel by Kristin Gudjondottir, and 3 recent free-standing works in ceramic by John Toki.

Born in the Bay Area into a family that savored the rich Japanese tradition of ceramics, John Toki has worked in clay for over 35 years. A respected studio artist and adjunct professor at the California College of the Arts (CCA) in Oakland, Toki is also the president and owner of Leslie Ceramic Supply Company in Berkeley, which his parents founded fifty years ago, and the co- author of several notable books on ceramic sculpture.

Kristin Gudjonsdottir, a native of Iceland, received her BFA from CCA in Oakland, where she studied with John Toki. His thesis advisor, he remembers the bright student fondly. Gudjonsdottir went on to take several glass casting classes and developed a technique for casting glass into clay molds. This personal approach gives Gudjonsdottir’s work a refined feel, yet the gritty surfaces of the glass sometimes smeared with clay lend the works a sense of history.
