In this exhibition of bronzes by three internationally recognized sculptors, we explore three very distinctive approaches for creating striking abstract forms of enduring grace.
Australian born Clement Meadmore (1929-2005) created his diminutive models in resin, which he would meditatively cut and assemble in endless configurations, to then be expertly fabricated by a foundry into bronze (or aluminum for his monumental works) at the scale that he felt would work best. IN BRONZE features six of Meadmore's "maquette sized works" and three larger "indoor sized" sculptures, together spanning five decades of his career.
Richard Erdman (b. 1952) most often begins with carving an impossibly delicate and elegant stone sculpture at one of his studios in Vermont, where he was born and raised, or Carrara, Italy, where he first apprenticed with master carvers after graduating from the University of Vermont. His most successful works are then turned into cast bronze editions. Erdman is known for exploring a particularly eloquent form at various scales in both bronze and stone, and this exhibition features eight of his stunning bronze pedestal and maquette sized works.
Hans Van de Bovenkamp (b. 1938) creates one-of-a-kind sculptures from sheet metal, coaxing the rigid material into organic forms. These carefully composed pieces seamlessly meld his background in architecture, which he studied in university, and his nearly life-long interest in the spiritual and sacred sites of the world, sparked by a series of trips to North Africa, Latin America, and Asia in the early seventies. The exhibition showcases six recently fabricated bronze works, from pedestal to free-standing.
IN BRONZE runs through March 30, 2014. For more information about the exhibition and these prominent artists, please click on the Press Release below.
