JUDITH STEWART

JUDITH STEWART Biography

Judith Stewart completed extensive training in painting and sculpture after receiving her BFA from Syracuse University and her MFA from the University of Illinois. While teaching painting at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Stewart earned a grant to study in Italy, where she began using sculptures from antiquity as subject matter for her paintings. Her preoccupation with observing three-dimensional form affirmed Stewart’s true interest in sculpture. After moving to Arizona in 1991, Stewart began working predominantly in wax for cast bronzes, and most recently has begun exploring the qualities of clay. Stewart appears to follow a very deliberate process to decide when to use detailed likeness and where to let features fall away, yet she describes her intense collaboration with the material in these comments about clay: “It is uniquely responsive while being handled, offering up wonderful happenings which are impossible to plan or anticipate. It seems a generous partner in art making.”

JUDITH STEWART Statement

There is in art no image more evocative than the human form. It is rich in associative powers in both personal and universal ways. When the art is sculpture, there is an added confrontation with substance and the claiming of space. When the sculpture is about the human form, there begins a probing into the essentials of life-likeness and the degree to which the artist wishes it to be there, or not there. No matter, however, whether it is a lump of mud or welded angle iron, or the deliberate forming of stone or bronze, we never fail to recognize our very selves, in another guise. For me it is this sense of life and gender, the fundamental human presence that I wish to convey in my sculpture.
