CHRISTOPHER CURTIS

CHRISTOPHER CURTIS Biography

Christopher Curtis is a stone and metal sculptor based out of Stowe, Vermont. He completed a B.S. degree in zoology at the University of Vermont, while also studying sculpture and fine art. During his time at UV, Curtis studied under Paul Achenbach, who encouraged Curtis in developing a broad range of sculpting skills. This has enabled him to make sculptures in many media including stone, stainless steel, bronze, wood, glass and fine metals. A sculptor for over forty years, Curtis’ works reflect his passion for stone, and his persistent interest in using science and technology for the creation of sculpture.

Christopher Curtis’ unusual approach to stone sculpture has helped redefine the boundaries of this ancient art. Often using stones as objects, not just material, Curtis carves natural stones and boulders employing traditional techniques as well as innovative methods. Using stones as the archetypal symbols of nature together with modern techniques and machines, Curtis emphasizes an environmental theme.

Juxtaposed with his stone sculpture, his modern, fluid forms in stainless steel demonstrate a fascination with both the old and the new. Hammers and chisels are replaced with CAD and TIG welding. Although contemporary in material and feeling, his stainless forms reflect his interest in ancient archetypes and timeless emotional content.

CHRISTOPHER CURTIS Statement

For several years I have been interested in the peculiar intersection of the past and the future. In using stone boulders not as material, but as objects, they can represent the past. By cutting them in familiar, even playful ways, my hope is that they will resonate with future viewers. In this way, I make a bridge between these otherwise very separate realms.
