34 years! (707) 933-1300 info@sculpturesite.com
When we started looking for a new gallery location earlier this year, we knew finding just the right space was going to be no easy task. After several months of looking for a great indoor space with outdoor display areas also included, we started to wonder if it was impossible! Then as soon as we toured Jack London Village, the excitement began!

BLENDING HISTORICAL WITH CONTEMPORARY
Sculpturesite's indoor gallery space is set in a series of six concrete vats that were originally built in the early 1940s for fermenting grapes for Glen Ellen Winery. After a few different owners and uses over the next few decades, a museum of local history decided to transform the vats into an exhibition space in 1995. Wide doorways were cut into the concrete, connecting the six separate rooms to form a single exhibition space. The original concrete was enhanced with modern frame-less glass doors and natural wood accents, which instantly attracted us to the present-day space. Seeing the way the existing wood warmed up the concrete and glass, we were inspired to source old-growth redwood slabs to customize the vats for the new Sculpturesite. Our search took us to Guerneville on the Russian River, where we discovered gorgeous, thick slabs on an ancient redwood that had been laying at the bottom of a canyon for a century in Cazadero. Last summer the equipment was finally available to haul up the tree, and cuts revealed zebra-like markings that give the "curly redwood grain" effect. Sightline Builders did a beautiful job cutting and fitting the two slabs with the natural "live" edges for the custom L-shaped desk in our office (pictured here), countertops for built-in storage and displays in the entry space, and long shelves in the main gallery space. We later added narrow shelves for jewelry and miniature sculpture display to make best possible use of the amazing wood. The final touch was the installation of several movable white walls attached to the concrete with barndoor hardware, to offer more background flexibility. The finished design expertly blends the contemporary with the historical, and provides the perfect exhibition space for contemporary sculpture.
